Targeting Gardening for Healthy Eating!

My students need gardening tools, such as trowels, gloves, and sheers to start an organic garden that will promote healthy choices for my young scientists.

My Students

In a room surrounded by animals and plants, my students enter our jungle of a classroom engulfed by science. The classroom is designed for exploration through research and learning, via hands-on activities. By the end of the year, I want my students to be at the forefront of a STEM education.

Each student is unique in his/her own way, which makes learning that much more special.

My students love learning about the ever-changing world of science, and are captured by the fact that every day brings new discoveries in science. The school is a welcoming environment, that encourages higher-level learning, while supporting the students at every step. The school houses over 1400 middle school students, who come from different ethnic backgrounds. In order to strengthen their learning experience, I want my students to utilize all the possible resources I can provide for them.

My Project

My students have started a community garden at our school, but lack the tools upkeep the garden safely. I asked my students what we needed in order to grow our own food and they said we should turn our garden into an organic patch. In order to be safe, they told me we needed garden gloves to protect their hands. In the past, we used our hands to dig small holes for the plants. They told me we should raise money to buy trowels and other gardening tools to be "real professional" planters. Their enthusiasm for this project makes me so excited to help bring it to life. It all started with a class discussion about why gardening is important and they started asking for the basic gardening materials to help ensure they are able to plant fruits and vegetables. After extensive research, they asked for trowels, sheers, gardening gloves, and weeders. With the trowels, my students will be able to have the proper tools to dig holes in the soil for the plants. With sheers, my students will be able to cut off ripe fruits and vegetables. The storage box will help keep our materials accessible to us near the garden, and keeping everything organized.

My junior scientists realized that nothing is healthier than feed their young bodies garden fresh vegetables.

In order to promote healthier food choices, my students will not only be getting nutrient dense vegetables and fruits, but they be part of the planting process. They told me that if they learned to garden at school, they'll be able to garden at home during the summer. They understand that eating vegetables and fruits will allow them to increase their intake of vitamins to help them grow into healthy young adults!
