Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a small, urban school. We opened just five years ago, and are well on our way to academic excellence. We have mostly English Language Learners and bilingual children. Our attendance is excellent. About 96% of our children receive free or reduced lunch. I teach Special Education students at the upper grades.
The students in my class are with me for three to four years. My Special Education students generally are not interested in reading because of years of struggling with it. They read at various reading levels and have varying degrees of proficiency and comprehension. I try to look for every way possible to get them to read and to make reading enjoyable and not a chore. As upper grade students, the expectations are there that they will do a great deal of reading on their own. They have a considerable amount of material to cover in the social sciences. For this reason, I have chosen novels related to historical periods which will be covered in their classes. Providing an audio model of the selections will allow us to listen and read together, so that I can discuss these relevant topics with them in their Language Arts class and support their other curriculum.
