I teach 6th-8th grade special needs students in the inner city of a large, urban area. Our school is in the Hispanic community where there is a high level of poverty, and unemployment. The community in which they live struggles to overcome the challenges of gangs, graffiti, inadequate opportunities for young people, and fear and uncertainty regarding immigration issues. Our school has been a beacon in the community, offering many activities to keep kids busy in the after school hours. My students have been diagnosed with various learning disabilities and in varying degrees of severity. Some students have difficulty with reading while others need assistance in math or writing. Each of them is unique and special. They are sweet, resilient learners who want nothing more than to succeed. It is my wish to provide them with many opportunities for successful completion of their course work. If they can become strong, successful writers, many opportunities will be available to them.
