Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade self-contained teacher at Arbuckle Elementary School in San Jose, CA. Arbuckle Elementary is a Title I school with 81% of students on free lunch. The thirty three students in my class are a diverse group comprised of the Hispanic (the majority), Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Filipino ethnicities. The aspect that most of them have in common is that they are English Language Learners. Two-thirds of my thirty-three students are designated English Language Learners while the remaining one-third, even though they have been labeled as fluent, still speak English as their second language at home.
Students who are learning English need fluent readers to model correct pronunciation of words and intonation of sentences. These skills are essential in order to increase reading comprehension, an area where English Language Learners are predominantly lacking. Unfortunately, most of my students' parents do not have the language capabilities to assist their children with sounding out words or modeling fluent reading at home. Fortunately, recorded books represent a viable option to supplement this situation. The situation for the majority of my students is dire: the average reading level of my class is at the middle of the second grade reading level, two grades below standard.
Therefore, I am requesting 20 tape player Walkmans with headphones, 40 rechargeable AA batteries, 1 battery charger, and 20 pencil boxes so that my students will be able to read books at home with the aid of audiotapes. The pencil boxes will serve as a carrying case for the Walkmans. The school library already has 100 kits that include books on audiotape and the corresponding text. I have also been authorized by my principal to order additional recorded books. Students will be able to check-out the books with corresponding audiotapes and Walkmans from the classroom. In order to assess the students' comprehension of the books, they will take computer tests on each title through the Accelerated Reader Program.
My students and I appreciate any help you can offer. With your help, my students can move one step closer to being fluent English speakers and comprehending readers.
