Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a small transfer school, founded to serve overage, under-credited 8th graders who have been held back two or more years; this means they are entering high school at 16. Many of these students are disengaged, have had various obstacles and challenges in their lives, including but not limited to homelessness, food insecurity, having children, etc.

My school provides full wrap-around services for the students and their families to ensure the social-emotional and academic needs are met, however, there is more that can be done inside the classroom to re-engage students who struggle.

Over the past three years, our school has seen an influx of international students, so that our school now has a 60% English Language Learner population, and a number of these students have had interrupted education. This means that not only do the students have to succeed academically but learn a new language in order to be college and career ready, as well as pass the English regents, which is only in English.

Our belief is that every child is capable and in this capacity, every student at our school will take at least one Advanced Placement course during their time at our school.

My Project

Many of our students have interrupted education and from places where technology was not available and so remote and blended learning with tablets is new and many students struggle with typing directly on the tablet and so wireless keyboards provide an entryway for students to access to their work.

We also have a 60% English Language Learner population and so our students are navigating new technology while learning a new language and academic content and so wireless keyboards enable students to navigate and flow between tabs and third party platforms in a more meaningful way so they engage with the content and worry less about how to access the work.

Keyboards also offer the opportunity for students to learn how to type, as this is a skill many will need for postsecondary readiness.
