Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a dance teacher at wonderful neighborhood public elementary school. I teach 500 students a week in PreK - 6th grade and I am working to build a strong dance program. My students represent the many faces of Chicago through a variety of cultural backgrounds and languages. They love to move to music and they want to learn about all kinds of dance genres. Having access to hands on materials helps to boost engagement in dance class.
My third grade dance class is ready to make some noise!
They are open to trying new things and they have already demonstrated kinesthetic and musical ability. So...let's tap!
We are ready to learn about the history of tap, learn some new steps, and create new dances of our own. We will be working on our skills in our weekly class, and preparing for an end of year performance.
My Project
My students will learn to wear, care for, and use their personal pair of tap shoes for weekly dance class. We will explore how to use the different parts of the feet to make sounds and steps. As we progress, we will increase our skill and speed, building dance steps into full dances.
With the proper footwear, my third grade class will be able to experience an authentic tap dance class in the middle of their school day.
They will have a unique sense of ownership of their learning as they use their classroom supplies (shoes) to both imitate and create movement.
