This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever wondered what life was like outside of where you stand? For some of my students they are unable to see beyond their window or front door what life could be like. Through the world of reading my students can live, imagine and learn all of the possibilities and opportunities that await them.
My students are 7 and 8 year olds that live in an urban setting in NY.
They are just beginning to really develop a passion for reading and what books have to offer them. They are like sponges, wanting to learn about everything and anything so they can share with each other new things. Inside of our classroom is a new world waiting to open up their minds and their hearts to what wonderful things await them through reading a book.
My Project
My students need a leveled library to keep their love of reading growing; as their interests vary so does their ability and reading level. Through series readers such as Junie B Jones students can learn about characters and how events change their behavior. Students will complete character analysis webs and gain a better understanding of what a character says and does tells more about who they are. Hopefully students will learn life lessons by making text-to-self-connections about how what they say and do also tells of the person they are and how actions shape and mold them into young adults of the world. My class will be able to increase their fluency rate and build stronger comprehension skills and understanding of books. They will achieve higher on standardized tests and do better in class and on homework through the enjoyment of reading.
My project is important because each student that walks into my classroom is just like my own child.
It is my responsibility to nurture and teach them and to make them feel safe. It is my responsibility to awaken their passion for learning and I know that through reading I can achieve that. I want them to enjoy reading as much as I do. Reading will affect the people they become in the future. Good readers are what they need to be. It sets the tone for a productive and rewarding life ahead.
