My Project

Mathematics is more than numbers—it’s patterns, problem-solving, and creativity. Tangrams are an engaging, hands-on tool that helps students explore geometry, fractions, symmetry, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving skills in a fun and interactive way. In a sixth-grade classroom, tangrams bridge the gap between abstract math concepts and real-world application, allowing students to visualize and manipulate shapes as they learn. Many of my students are kinesthetic learners who thrive when math is active and tactile. However, our classroom currently lacks a set of tangrams, which limits opportunities for this kind of experiential learning.

Project Description:

With a classroom set of durable tangrams, students will participate in small group challenges, design their geometric puzzles, and apply math vocabulary in context. We will use tangrams to deepen understanding of angles, area, perimeter, and proportions while also encouraging creativity through art-based math projects. Tangram activities will be incorporated into math stations, early finisher challenges, and even cross-curricular lessons connecting math to history and culture, such as the origins of tangrams in China.

Expected Impact:

This project will enable my 60 sixth graders to approach math concepts from multiple angles—both literally and figuratively. Tangrams will support visual-spatial reasoning, encourage perseverance through problem-solving, and provide a fun, collaborative environment where students are excited to engage with math. By allowing students to manipulate and create, tangrams will help foster confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
