Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom serves high school students with low incidence, multiple special needs.
The students are hard-working and bright and are from a variety of ethnic, economic and family backgrounds. They are bussed from many surrounding cities and towns in two different states because local programs could not provide for their unique combinations of special needs.
The students are diagnosed with cerebral palsy, seizure disorder, autism and other disabilities.
Some of the students are wheelchair users, some are hearing and/or visually impaired and all are primarily non-speaking.
However, not speaking is not the same as having nothing to say!
My students CAN communicate by using alternative or augmentative communication (AAC) in place or in addition to the little speech they have. Specialized AAC devices cost $7,000-10,000 dollars or more (just Google Dynavox or PRC AAC). They are generally highly specialized tablet computers running expensive communication software with built in assistive technology features. Such devices students who cannot speak are able to have a voice.
If we were to attain a Tablet PC we could install the specialized software to make it into an AAC device. We could make the tablet a voice!
