This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is a magnet school that lets students from low performing schools come to our school. Our students are predominantly 93% black, 5% Hispanic, 1% white and 2% other. Our students are currently bused to our school from all over the city and from many poverty stricken areas. I currently teach a First Grade class of 15 students. My students have been identified as high risk and significantly below grade level in reading. We have a smaller class size than the average First Grade because of our needs and struggles.
I teach a class filled with loving and talented students. They are struggling with reading and have been placed in an Intensive Reading Program. As a result, they receive an additional hour of reading a day. We receive so much reading instruction, my students sometimes feel overwhelmed. They love to work in centers and be independent. They need opportunities to have fun while they learn the concepts that are essential to their future.
I would like to incorporate the Hot Dot cards and pens into our independent work time so students can have more fun as they learn. The cards are self-check and developmental appropriate for our group. When students become actively engaged and have fun they learn more and retain the information better. I know that with these materials, my students will become successful readers and life long learners.
I can not do this alone. My school has little funds for purchasing classroom items. I have spent a lot of my own money to purchase items for my classroom, but I need a little more help. Your contribution to our project will ensure a better quality education that is fun, interactive and educational. You have the power to make a difference in the lives of 15 struggling readers.
