My Students
What comes to mind when I tell you that I am a public school teacher in the poorest congressional district in the United States of America? I can assure you that it is nothing other than beautiful, multi-cultural classrooms that are bustling with bilingual students learning how to read, write and express themselves in a new language.
As English Language Learners my students have very diverse language needs that are met through high-quality, differentiated instruction.
They come to school every day ready to learn and it is my job to provide them with the necessary materials, support and scaffolds to succeed.
My Project
I am always looking for additional ways for my students to hear their voices and one way that has shown great success is through audio recordings. However, audio recordings require classroom technology that is not always available to me in my current role. That is why I am requesting your help in receiving two audio recording devices and an iPad that will be used to record student responses in small reading groups. These responses will be used for brainstorming, reading comprehension and writing, as well as refining voice and tone.
As I previously did not have access to recording devices, but recognized the importance of audio recording in boosting student learning, I used my personal phone to record some of the struggling students responses during small reading group discussions.
Students would in turn listen to their responses before writing down their answers in their reading journals. The impact was limited due to the technology available, however, I was able to see the potential behind this strategy. It showed me how audio recordings allow students to hear their voice through a medium with which many of them are already quite practiced and comfortable.
