My students need the Bigmack Communicators, Button Talk set, and the Tabletop Light Box to communicate their thoughts and ideas about science while exploring light, sounds and colors in their environment.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are exceptional needs preschoolers of poverty with a wide range of disabilities (Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down's Syndrome, sensory processing disorders, chromosome abnormalities, orthopedic impairments, vision impairments, developmental delays, and speech-language delays). They thrive on learning new skills and light up when each new step is achieved. We celebrate each of their small steps toward success.
Despite their struggles, they are mighty, energetic and most importantly, able to succeed!
Most of my students function on a 12-month to 36-month developmental age, and struggle with daily communication skills compared to their same-age peers.
My Project
Most of my students struggle with communication on a daily basis due to a variety speech-language disorders therefore making it nearly impossible to participate in classroom conversations and lessons. The Bigmack Communicator set along with the Button Talk set will allow my students to expressively communicate their thoughts and ideas while learning about light and sound using the Tabletop Light Box, Rainbow Sound Blocks, and Light Learning Letters.
Communication is paramount to learning, builds a bridge to social interactions, and the Bigmack Communicators will make it possible for our preschoolers to express their knowledge independently!
We will incorporate these augmented communication devices with the Light Box to teach our young students about colors, shapes, light, shadows, letters as well as a plethora of other developmental skills such as fine motor, visual perception and visual discrimination.
