Tales of a Fourth Grade Teacher

My students need various books, with high interest titles, to enhance their reading experience.

My Students

Teaching children in one of the most expensive cities in the country brings many unusual challenges. Since both parents work, most of my students stay at school in various after school enrichment programs until 5 or 6 o'clock in the evening. I've seen free reading time in these programs, and unfortunately comic books or graphic novels are the only books available.

I would like to try and fill my students' after school program reading time with some great book choices.

My Project

I have found the key to better reading comprehension for my students is to provide them with different instructional levels of text. This allows them to practice developing reading strategies they've learned, and still read a great book. I must have good literature available whenever they are ready to read.

As their teacher, it is my responsibility to help my students develop a natural interest in reading.

If I can allow them access to my library titles in their after school program, this will enhance their Language Arts instructional time during the day.
