With the school year now in full swing, I am taking a good look at what is lacking in our classroom. We need engaging picture books. I am always striving to give my student's the best possible education and experiences. I read to the children everyday and I also send books home for the children to share with their families.
I am a pre-kindergarten teacher to 18 wonderful children in the Bronx. Most of the children come from low-income families who are struggling to make ends meet. Many of the children do not have their own collection of picture books at home so I want to make books available to them at school. I have been sending two books a week home with each child and 16 out of 18 children return them to me on time and in good condition. The parents are working with me and see the importance of reading to their children daily. Parents have a big impact on their children as reading role models.
Our classroom library has a limited amount of books and I would like to add books that I know will appeal to the children. I have taught early childhood grades for twenty years and know the picture books that children really enjoy. I have selected books that capture a child's imagination and interest. The books I have chosen will keep the children turning pages. I believe that children will desire to become life long readers if they are exposed early to books that appeal to them. Young children love books and to be read to, please help me in my endeavor to enrich their lives with good literature.
My goal is to provide an enriching environment where a love of learning and reading can be instilled in all of the children in my care.
