My students need books about fish, a paint-a-shape fish pack, candy fish, a complete set of fishing for sight-words, and self-sticking craft fish eyes to learn about fish through art.
Middle school can be tough. Socially, emotionally, and academically, there can be lots of challenges for students in the early teen years. My students are learning English and adapting to a new culture while navigating these difficult years, and this creates an extra layer of challenge.
My English language learner students are resilient, resourceful, and caring young teens.
Many of my students this year recently arrived refugees from Africa and the Middle East. They tackle problems cheerfully and with gusto, but they also experience significant adjustment challenges. These students have been through a great deal beyond their control in their short lives, but they use multiple talents and strengths to overcome current obstacles.
My Project
Each year, the students in my Language Arts classroom raise American Shad from eggs to fry and then release them in a local river basin. Before the eggs arrive in our classroom, we learn about the life cycle of this historically important fish and why it is no longer thriving due to dams, pollution, and overfishing.
The fish-related materials I am requesting will help prepare my students to take good care of the fish nursery we will be maintaining in our classroom later in the year.
We will read both nonfiction and fiction books about fish to learn key vocabulary. The Rainbow Fish storytelling kit will give English Language Learners important practice in using new vocabulary. The create-a-fish forms and self-adhesive eyes will allow students to review and retain new information. In keeping with the theme, the complete set of magnetic sight-word fishing kits will allow our newest readers to learn.
