Taking the Stigma Out of Reading Intervention

Help me give my students at MSS more flexible seating and more books!

My Students

Hi there! I am a very lucky Reading Specialist for MSS, a large K-2 school in Exeter, NH. I love my work. I get to: teach emergent readers in small groups; collaborate and consult with administrators, teachers, paras, interventionists, and families; and work with community stakeholders to boost the love of reading. Some of the kiddos I work with are struggling in reading, some need a boost of confidence or instruction, and some have IEPs- but they are all amazing kids!

My goal for this project is for every child at my school to see themselves as a reader, and to see my classroom as a reading space.

I want to get the stigma out- and let the fun opportunities for all kids to read in! I am looking for funding for more books to read, and more flexible seating for my classroom to make it warm and friendly to all students. Thank you for any help you provide!

My Project

Before I came to our school, the room I work in was called the Reading Lab and only remedial students were invited in. Furniture was desks and traditional chairs. Now, I have renamed it The Literacy Room and ask all teachers and administrators to include it in classroom tours and open it for Open Houses, and purchased some furniture on my own. But I still have work to do!

My goal is for all students at our school- not only kids who receive reading help- to see this space as a reading room for ALL students and feel welcome at all times.

Please help me make this happen with more flexible seating and more books!
