Help me give my students laminating pouches, puzzles, story telling kits and other materials as engaging ways to learn and practice, and motivation to improve communication skills.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Speech Language Pathologist and I have students from ages 4-10 on my caseload who have speech and language disorders which may include speech sound errors, developmental delays, receptive and expressive language delays and disorders, fluency disorders (stuttering), learning disabilities, processing disorders, hearing impairment, cleft palate, autism, or medical diagnoses and syndromes which impact their ability to communicate effectively in everyday situations, whether it be to get their needs met or to engage in conversation and interact with adults and their peers.
My students know how important the ability to communicate clearly and effectively is and they work hard to 'have a voice'.
Over the past year and half, many of my students struggled to access their speech services, whether it be from ineffective technology and equipment, lack of access to the internet or platform, or difficulty participating in online activities without face-to-face interaction. Transmission was often choppy so feedback was not always effective. Some of my students found it difficult to focus and attend and while we all did our best on both sides of the screen, speech therapy was not as effective as it is when we are able to interact in-person.
My Project
Students with speech and language impairments from pre-K to 5th grade will engage in these activities, enjoy learning and practicing, and improve their speech sounds, vocabulary, conversational, social, and language processing skills through motivating and fun activities.
Several standards in ELA are addressed in therapy, including - but not limited to ELA K1.1, ELA 1.1.1, ELA 2.1.1.
Playing games also improves their ability to work cooperatively, turn take, and interact appropriately with their peers - something they have missed out on during COVID.
I have a large range of students whom I want to reach and engage during speech time which will motivate them to continue the work at home. A positive experience in the speech room builds their confidence and motivation as a communicator, and ultimately, increases progress rates and decreases time spent outside of the general education classroom. Many of the requested items will be used as reinforcement to keep the kids engaged in their session and focused on their tasks. Functional communication skills are developed with manipulatives and building toys by requesting and making choices in order to complete a task Social skills and cooperative learning are developed by playing cooperative and competitive games by learning to work together towards a common goal, turn taking, sportsmanship, and conversational skills. With storybook kits and activities related to them we will develop language and literacy skills such as answering and asking questions, recalling details, building vocabulary and other semantic skills, as well as addressing narrative skills such as story retelling. These skills transfer to the classroom in reading and writing.
