My students need 13 Chromebooks to do all the things that will make them successful in this 21st century. To take them beyond the walls of our classroom to study and read about diverse populations.

My Students
My 32 students have a strong desire, eagerness and ecstasy for learning. This excitement for school should be a perpetual component in our classroom, but as the temperature rises, this desire decreases. Our classroom doesn't have a working air conditioner, and this creates an environment that is intolerable to learn in.
My school is located in an area which is quickly becoming the epicenter of Brooklyn.
It is becoming one of the most rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods in Brooklyn; however, as housing prices and the cost of living increase, my students and their families are living with very few opportunities.
I have several students who have Individual Educational Programs (IEP’s) who needs that extra bit of comfort to focus and achieve their educational goals. Also, some of my students are in the shelter system.
School is often the only safe haven that these students have. This safe haven should also be a place of physical comfort. When the temperature rises and humidity takes over, this comfort instantly leaves the room. If the physical environment for learning becomes unbearable, then school no longer becomes a place of retreat.
My Project
I would use the Chrome books, in a variety of ways, in learning across the curriculum. First, in reading, students would have access to online books using the technology listed above and creating a listening center.
For my English Language Learners, Students with disabilities, and struggling readers, this combination of the picture and the words being read aloud to them is very powerful.
Today's students love technology and this will help them to stay engaged in learning.
Second, in writing, students would be able to practice their keyboarding skills, using the Chromebooks to type up final drafts.
In addition, students could use this technology in math for fluency work with math fact practice and other engaging math programs. Finally, students would be able to research using the computer and library websites, for a wide range of informational topics. Many of my students do not have this technology at home and the classroom is the only exposure they may have to a computer.
Technology is everywhere, entwined in almost every part of our lives. It affects how we shop, socialize, connect, play and learn. Technology helps prepare our students for the real world, to be successful citizen. As I reach out to my community I remember the old adage "It takes a village to raise a child."
