"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." I want every single one of my students to be successful in life. I have extremely high expectations which I expect them to meet each and every day. A typical day in my classroom is fun and hands-on! My students look forward to coming to my class!
My students have a desire to learn about the world around them.
Our school is concept-driven and focuses on ways to organize and make sense of learning, rather than just facts and superficial learning. We ask questions such as "How does it work?" and "How is it connected to other things?"
I teach in an extremely high-poverty school where the majority of my students are on free or reduced lunch. My students need materials where they can apply skills to be used in the real world.
My Project
Virtual reality is the next best thing to actually being present. Technology is now firmly rooted in the education environment. The headsets would provide multi-sensory learning experiences which foster innovation, communication, collaboration, and creativity skills.
The virtual reality headsets would be used throughout the entire school year for any learning experiences/activities that would tie into the curriculum.
Students will have the opportunity to go on virtual field trips and examine areas and events that would be unavailable to them by any other means. Students with disabilities will be able to participate in experiments or learning environments that are not possible in the real world. During our unit on community, students will take on the role of a person from different cultures and travel to their countries and experience their customs first hand. Finally, students will gain new perspectives. For example, students will walk through a water molecule, explore it in detail and become familiar with its parts.
The impact of this grant would be astronomical for our students. The student needs driving this grant is the fact that our students lack experience and the means to gain that experience. We can ask our students to research and Google ancient civilizations; however, what an experience it would be for our students to actually be walking around Mesopotamia and witness the earliest cities being built! Students could travel to the depths of the ocean and swim alongside anglerfish all while learning about habitats. Virtual reality motivates students and encourages active participation. It offers the possibility of learning to be tailored to learners’ characteristics and personal needs.
