This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Resilient, positive, compassionate, and driven describe the scholars at my middle school. The obstacles the scholars have to overcome simply to make it to school would have many adults think of quitting and yet they succeed and thrive. The middle school is located in one of the poorest and most under-served neighborhoods in a large, rich city. They represent an array of abilities, beliefs, backgrounds, ethnicities, and identities. All of their differences unite them together in a beautiful way. The school has formed a strong community in which no scholar falls through the cracks and all have a chance at academic and social success.
My Project
In the last year, 3D Printing has taken off and the students are hooked. They love creating and designing projects on the computer and then seeing them come to life via the 3D printer. We have a 3D printer creating student inspired work all day. Students come to the library during lunch and after school to work on projects and tinker.
3D Printing has really helped students with project management skills, the revision process, and patience.
Students work together on problems (how to get a print to work), on design ideas, and then using the printed items. They are really creative and inspired to try more challenging projects from playing around using the 3D printer. We currently have one 3D printer which can at best print two creations a day. With another printer and filament we can double the work and student enthusiasm!
