Taking it One Step at a Time: Milers Looking For Pedometers
My students need 30 pedometers to help them keep track of how much work they are putting in on our recently built track.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Before I got my driver's license I could remember thinking that everywhere I walked was comparable to marathon length distances, only to be told by my father that I had barely walked a mile or less! My students now face this challenge as they use our recently built track. Help us with pedometers.
Think back to junior high.
Now think about your PE class in junior high. Overcrowded, and over focused on core sports like baseball, football, and basketball. My students face similar challenges. We try to involve all students, but we are hindered by a lack of space and supplies. Recently, my school has added a track for our students to use. Unfortunately, they have no idea where to start. How to run, how long? The students at my school are so thirsty for any physical activity. Many have no athletic experience outside of school and some did not even have PE in elementary school. We fear that these students just do not have the resources or knowledge base to ensure long and healthy lives. Our school is lower income middle school in NYC. Like other similar urban schools, our students have adult responsibilities that keep them from exploring sports and fitness after school. Although we offer 3 team sports a year for students we don't reach nearly as many as needed.
My Project
Running is the most basic of exercises, but contrary to belief it needs to be learned. Stride lengths, proper form and training techniques can all be taught in time. However, with the pedometers I am asking for my students to get a much needed head start into the running world. These pedometers will teach my students exactly how much they should be completing at school, which in turn acts as a springboard for them to know what they need to accomplish to lead healthy lives when a teacher is not leading them. With these pedometers I plan to start education on how to become runners. The pedometers will help them see which distances they are comfortable with, how far they need to go to reach both fitness and competitive goals and how much work is truly needed to burn the calories they take in during the day.
The main goal of any physical educator is to present students the knowledge of how to maintain lifelong fitness goals.
This knowledge coupled with the fact that running is the most cost effective exercise for the cash strapped parents and students I service really compounds the difference that these pedometers can make in these children's minds. The ability to lead a healthy lifestyle can indeed start right here. I have the knowledge to give them, I finally have the space, now I need the tools.
