Taking Coding to the Next Level

My students need Ozobot robots so that they can apply and extend their computer coding knowledge.

My Students

I work with students that range from grades Kinder through 5th grade. This range means they have a variety of background knowledge levels and experiences. Yet, despite these differences, they have many of the same needs: to be cared for, to learn new things, and to be successful on their educational journey.

My students come to class expecting to be challenged.

They want to discover new things on their own and with their peers. They want opportunities to problem-solve, and then to apply what they learn to “real” life situations.

My Project

Learning to code is a type of literacy that students will definitely need in the future. There are many benefits of coding. Students will have a better understanding of the technology around them as they use and create code. Problem-solving skills, creative thinking skills, and decision-making skills will increase due to the need to write code that directs the robot to complete the intended task. Since coding is very sequential, students will need to take a problem and break it down into manageable steps. They will learn perseverance, as they work to write the precise code and “debug” it when it doesn’t work the way they want.

The Ozobot robots will meet the needs of my students at their current ability levels and continue to be useful as they move up in their ability levels.

The ingenuity of Ozobots is that they can teach coding from beginner to advanced levels. My Kinder and first-grade students can learn basic coding by using various color markers, the Ozobot “reads” the lines and completes the task. At the same time, my 2nd through 5th-grade students can code the Ozobot using the Blockly language.

Coding is a language that today’s students need to be fluent in to communicate with our ever-changing, technology-based world. These codable robots will provide many opportunities for them to become fluent in this technological language.
