My Students
Really interesting literature can motivate any student to read, but only if they have access to it. My students need a class set of Marching for Freedom to challenge them, inspire them, and restore the knowledge that one person, even a young person, can make a huge difference.
I teach 5th grade in a highly gifted, magnet program.
My students are identified as having an IQ of 145 or above, and have the potential to be tomorrow's leaders. One third of my students are English Language Learners, demonstrating their brilliance despite a language barrier. Because of their highly gifted identification, I make every effort to differentiate their curriculum to best suit their diverse needs. They are exceptional, but not just because of their intellect. They are truly a joy to know and I feel incredibly fortunate to be their teacher.
My Project
A class set of Marching for Freedom will not only enable my students to work at their own pace and further my ability to differentiate instruction to best meet their diverse needs, but it will set the stage for our theme for this year, Taking a Stand. Every child should know the sacrifices made by the children of Selma during the Civil Rights movement, and I know this book will have a huge impact on my students, inspiring them to take a stand and make a difference in our own community. Through this amazing true story, they will explore deep questions about courage, sacrifice, and justice, and will complete the unit with a far more detailed understanding of the struggle for equality in our country.
With this donation, you are not just providing books; you are providing an opportunity.
These students have the skills, the talent, and the will to do exceptional things. With inspiration from a book like Marching for Freedom, there is no telling what cause they might end up supporting, and no limit to their efforts to make our world a more just one. They simply need the materials. Thank you so much for considering our project.
