Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach life sciences in a urban school district in Connecticut. I am the first life sciences' teacher in the entire history of the school. One hundred percent of our students are on free breakfast and lunch. Due to the recent budget issues throughout the State, schools and school districts have lost significant amounts of funding.
I am the first life sciences teacher in my urban school. My classroom came with absolutely no science supplies. My students are severely underprivileged and are very limited in science exposure. They have expressed a great interest in the life sciences. Many of my students have special needs and have exhibited significant gains in literacy and reading comprehension through my class. I have a group of approximately 40 special needs students who have been practicing on microscopes. They are extremely interested in the microscopic world. They are starting to express interest in organisms and how they are adapted to life. I hope to continue to keep their interest in the sciences so that they may continue on their unbelievable path to success.
The students have increased their literacy skills because of their genuine interest in the life sciences. I am very enthusiastic and I encourage the students to explore their world. Many expand their learning with the aid of a resource library that I acquired on my own. They have been able to conduct their own, legitimate research. I am requesting a general slide set so that I may continue to foster understanding and curiosity of my students. I want to prove to educators that a student can go anywhere when presented with the right materials, even if my students are considered "special needs."
Hands-on science is known to be the most productive method in teaching science. My students have been empowered by their desires to learn on their own. Every teacher would die for this experience. I am grateful that I am a part of it. I want to continue this learning curve with your help. Please consider contributing to the development and success of our future science students. You and I can insure the success of students by investing in our own time and money.
