My students come from a diverse, lottery selected student population. In my class, students will DO authentic work, IMMERSE themselves in field experiences and experimentation, REFLECT on what they have learned and SHARE with our school and community. They have opportunities to teach each other and through our project based learning approach, are already contributing authentically to our regional community. Students are excited about learning and have the opportunity to discover and pursue their individual interests within our project whether experimentation, graphic design, writing, photography, outreach and much more!
My Project
Students will be acting as citizen scientists and partnering with a local non-profit to explore the relationship between humans and nature in a three part project. First we will assess the natural and built environment in and around San Diego bay with shoreline assessments, marine debris surveys, infrastructure and human use evaluations and water quality testing. Using the equipment such as theAmScope B120C-E1 Siedentopf Binocular Compound Microscope we have registered for, we will collect and process our data. Findings will be submitted to local non-profits, Marine Debris Tracker app and inform our second segment, Project BabyLegs. Project BabyLegs is a microplastic removal feasibility study we are conducting for San Diego Coast Keeper. Students will make and use BabyLegs, assess the microplastics origins and quantities as well as ease of use. Finally, students will have the opportunity to pursue an individual research endeavor where they will identify a local issue with global implications and make a children's book to share with a nearby elementary school class.
