All my students have significant developmental disabilities including cognitive and physical disabilities. They range in age from 12 to 16 years of age.
Due to the severity of their disabilities, they attend a separate school for students with those types of delays.
Most of the students come from low-income families. My students' needs are considered intensive, and they struggle with many day-to-day tasks. Outside of school, many of their families struggle with life in general and find it difficult to meet their children's basic needs. Despite all their struggles, my students enjoy school and the safe, secure environment that it provides.
My Project
My students' families sometimes have a hard time meeting their children's basic needs. Appropriately sized, clean clothing may be hard to find, and, many times, my students' neurotypical siblings grab what can be found so that they can get to school. Unfortunately, that often leaves my students with soiled or poorly fitting undergarments.
Additionally, my students often lack healthy foods at home, particularly at the end of the month when money runs out.
We need underwear and small food items. Having healthy choices of food items that can easily be slipped into backpacks at the end of the day might just tide them over until they can get another meal at home or school.
