Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a 5th grade teacher, part of my students' literacy experience is to read chapter books with story lines that begin to develop plot, character and setting in greater detail. Such a step can appear to be a daunting task for many readers to undertake. This is why I believe it is important that we take that adventure as a class several times throughout the year. Choosing books that the students want to read, but may be just beyond their independent reading level, asks students to take on the challenge with fellow classmates. The rewards are self-confidence as a reader, as well as being provided a cherished item that the student can keep in their own personal library. With it they will be able to share their joy of reading with younger siblings and friends. Working in a low-income school on the south side of Chicago, it is hard to place the burden of purchasing these books on the parents. This is why I am turning to the kind donors of Donors Choose to ask that the last two books that we will read for the school year be funded. From the reading inventories the students have filled out at the beginning of the school year, I have chosen the books: "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by J.K.Rowling and "Drive-By" by Lynne Ewing. In addition, I am asking for two composition notebooks for each student to keep separate notes of their journey with each book. Thank you for your kind consideration.
