Take me out to the ball the game. America's pastime is baseball. Yet sadly this is not the case at Friendship Academy of Science and Technology. Our students are begging for a baseball team, and have been for the past three years, but sadly we cannot start one because of a lack of equipment.
The students have sent around petitions to gain support for the team.
There is not a lack of support but rather a lack of resources and equipment. My students are high school students that attend a middle high school that serves students grade 6-12. We are a public school that is fairly new. We opened our doors four years ago for 6th and 9th graders only. Each year we have added a grade until we reached our full capacity of 6-12 grade, and a student population of 740 students. The students are hard workers. Many of our students are successful because of the spots they play. The sports give the students a healthy, safe place to expend extra energy. The athletic program also gives the students an extra incentive to behave well and maintain good grades. Some of our students desperately need the extra incentive and motivation. We have male and female basketball and soccer, volleyball and badminton for girl. Baseball is making a comeback in the city and our students want to be a part.
The equipment provided will help the school create a high baseball team. The baseball team will provide an outlet for the students, a sport for the spring time. We currently do not have any sports in the spring for the boys. This is sad because the spring time is the time when the students have the most energy and need a constructive and organized way to release this energy. Baseball would provide the structure and outlet for the students. Baseball is also a sport that many our students have never had the opportunity or chance to play. Baseball would give us the chance to teach the students a new sport and give them safe fun during the spring. During the fall and winter our students keep their grades up to that they can play soccer or basketball. However, in the spring since there is no sport grades tend to slip and so do the students. Baseball would give the students something to look forward to and give them an incentive to keep their grades up and maintain a positive behavior.
The donations will purchase bats, balls, gloves, and catcher's gear for the students.
This will be a great start to helping our school create a baseball team. This will give the students an exciting, engaging, productive sport to participate in for the spring season. The students would benefit from the time outdoors playing baseball and the added incentive to keep their grades up and behavior positive.
