This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Whats the big deal about drones? They are just another toy, like remote control cars. Well, in a way. But drones and cars are soi much more, especially when you are able to actually program their paths.
While we definitely do not want to wake up in a real life scenario out of The Terminator, we must acknowledge that AI is a part of our lives.
Instead of eschewing technology completely, children must learn to master it. There is an old expression in education that says "Play is children's work." Play is how children see the world and how they learn. All learning does not have to be fun, and sometimes requires a pencil and paper. Yet, the learning that will enable children to creatively problem solve, try new ideas, and communicate effectively (all part of the STEAM learner profile), will be developed when children are left to play. Learning to program the path of a car or drone will help children make predictions and test out their theories. They will refine their thinking and adjust their measurements, and never use those words explicitly. What they will be able to do is explain what they wanted to achieve and determine if they were successful. So, yes, they are toys. However, they are the gate way to new ideas, creativity, and problem solving. The 21st Century learning to which we claim to aspire.
