My students need admission to the New York Aquarium for a weekend trip to see a new part of New York and practice our English.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all high school students who are recent immigrants to the United States, and all are at various stages of learning English. We have a diverse student body that speaks more than 20 languages and represents every continent other than Antarctica. Our students must conquer the dual challenge of mastering the content of high school classes while at the same time doing it in a new language, English. From coming to the country with almost no English in 9th grade, we send the majority of our students to college right here in America.
Language is a living organism that must be practiced within authentic contexts in order for it to grow. For our newest students English can seem to be an insurmountable hurdle. Also, they often do not see much of the city they live in other than their immediate neighborhood and the school. We have found over the years that getting out to see the many sights of New York City for Saturday field trips, in contexts other than the classroom, helps nurture these students in their English acquisition. It also helps them develop socially by giving them the opportunity to spend time getting to know their teachers and their diverse group of peers.
The New York Aquarium in Coney Island is a trip we have taken in the past, but cannot afford this year due to budget cuts. Many of our students have never seen aquatic animals or been to a zoo in their home countries. At the aquarium, we can help them learn the basic vocabulary of getting around at a public place, as well as the more fun vocabulary about animals splashing, swimming, and feeding right in front of their eyes. This trip will be particularly beneficial for language acquisition and developing relationships across the school because we will also bring up to 5 of our more linguistically advanced students from the after-school Science Challenge Club to act as buddies and tutors about the science of what we will see.
In the past, I have seen students who are silent in school open up and flourish on these trips. It is a safe environment where there is none of the perceived intimidation of the classroom where they may think they need to speak perfectly. Students who participate consistently do stumble along the way, but they eventually learn conversational English and have become some of the most active and successful academic leaders in class. The club can only continue though if we can get funding to go on trips such as these. Your donation for this trip can help kick start the growth of these wonderful children not only in language, but also in becoming members of their new school community and their new home, America.
