Take Home STEM Kits for Family Involvement

Help me give my students 7 STEM kits using a 3D pen, duct tape, snap circuits, Shrinky Dinks, cardboard with Makedo construction screws, and materials for baking cupcakes and cookies.

My Students

I am a teacher/librarian at an elementary school that services many Navy and Army families in Hawaii. The library is the center of encouraging literacy on our Preschool-6th grade campus. About half of the students at my school are military dependents who move locations every three years. Parental involvement is a difficult challenge faced by the Pearl Harbor Elementary community. Many parents are unable to attend school wide events due to work or family obligations.

It is very important that parents take an active part in their child's education and interests.

My Project

I'd like to encourage students to connect with their families through take home STEM kits. The products of their projects will be showcased at the school, and parents will be aware, firsthand, of the creations they make using the STEM kits.

I plan to offer various take home kits with supplies and instructions so students can create and tinker utilizing science, technology, engineering, and math principles.

Students can make a wallet out of duct tape using The Kids' Guide to Duct Tape Projects book, a dream house using a 3D Pen, and bake cookies and cupcakes with the book Delectable Cupcakes with a Side of Science: 4D An Augmented Recipe Science Experience, explaining the science behind their ingredients. Additional kits will involve using snap circuits to experiment with electricity to make flashing lights, cardboard and Makedo screws to make full sized vehicles, and Shrinky Dinks to create jewelry.

The take home kits will be a great way to encourage critical thinking and problem solving in an innovative and fun way! The whole family can be involved in using the kits.

One of the biggest hurdles my students face in the classroom is not realizing the connection between what they are learning and how it applies to the real world. These kits will show them how to create and invent using STEM principles. It will encourage them to explore careers in engineering, architecture, fashion, and the restaurant industry. Students will be required to document their projects and discuss the scientific principles they learned while using the kits when they return the kits to school. They will also share next steps or future projects they would like to undertake using the skills they learned.
