This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom is usually filled with "oohs" and "ahhhs."
My students live in a high poverty area and dedicate little to no resources on things such as calculators.
Their basic needs are barely met at home, so buying technology such as calculators for classwork isn't exactly what's on their minds. I'd like to remove this extra burden from them by supplying them with a calculator they can take home.
My Project
I started off the year with 20 calculators... there are 30 students in my class. The calculators are only used in the classroom. This makes the homework a little less relevant, since they do not have access to the technology to calculate some of the advanced numbers at home (scientific notation, exponents, decimals, fractions, etc.).
With these calculators, I will... you will essentially give students the gift of this technology at home. Furthermore, this particular calculator has the visual capacity to display fractions, which would allow for more rigorous assignments that would meet the common core standards.
This project will allow students to become familiar with a piece of technology that is of their time.
Imagine growing up in this age and not having adequate access to technology. Without a doubt, these calculators will change lives, thoughts and allow students to achieve more than they believe that they can.
