My Students

When we left school on March 13, we didn't know that we wouldn't be setting foot in our school for the rest of the school year. Overnight, our school year was turned upside down. With changing projections about the ability to teach in-person next year, teachers like me are preparing for students to be out of the classroom for at least a portion of the year. I want to ensure my students have the tools they need to be successful at their fingertips.

Despite the challenges that exist in this strange time in our world today, my students are eager to continue to learn and grow.

My students are avid and enthusiastic readers who love to explore new words, immersing themselves in books and then talking about what they've read with each other. The current pandemic has reduced access to libraries, and when schools are closed, it is more difficult to put quality books in students' hands.

My Project

I firmly believe the best way to create avid readers is to have plenty of high-interest, engaging books that students want to read. In our classroom, we have plenty of books to read, share, and discuss. However, not all students have the same access to a rich variety of books at home. Our district will be following a distance learning model through at least the first quarter of the year, so it is even more important to ensure kids have great books to read at home. I am requesting engaging series books with new and favorite characters to build students' home libraries.

This project will help build students' home libraries with high-quality, exciting books that will promote reading together as a family.

Lola Levine, Desmond Cole, and the other books I have requested are popular series books that bridge the gap between easy readers and more involved chapter books. Series books help kids get hooked into reading other books with the same characters.

Many of the books I am requesting also reflect the diversity of our student population and include Black and Latinx main characters. Students with the same book series can have virtual discussions with each other as we explore character development. Finally, these books are fun for students to read on their own, through virtual lessons, and with families.
