This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are incredibly creative and hungry for an outlet to express themselves. After Hurricane Katrina, arts electives were one of the last things to return to schools. ASA drama program began in 2016-17 school year and has been growing every year since!
Our play production program consists of 30 budding young theatre artists with an appreciation for using the stage and their voices to make the world a better place.
Every year we write, perform, and tour holiday plays for k-2nd graders with the hope of inspiring the next generation of theatre-goers and artists.
Our theatre program has become family to our 30 innovative, powerful, young thespians.
My Project
We will travel to Northwestern State University for Louisiana Thespian Festival where students will watch other schools perform, attend sessions led by theatre professionals, and compete for scholarship opportunities. Young artists will get a taste of what college is like from undergraduate theatre majors helping to facilitate the event.
Students will take our fall production about school shootings and the effects of gun violence on our youth to statewide competition.
For the past two years, this event has inspired many young artists to pursue their passion for the performing arts and go to colleges around the area. Unfortunately, we have been limited in regards to how many young artists we can bring based on who could afford to go and how much we could raise through micro fundraising. This year, we aspire to all help raise enough through DonorsChoose to help our entire play production team to go to competitions so that every young artist can experience the wonders of competing at state level in a collegiate setting.
