Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Take A Stand! What will my children feel strongly about? Can I find a way to inspire my children to stand up for fairness, justice, human rights? I have selected several core literature books for this school year, with each one I hope to extend our learning across the curriculum.
My students are Gifted and Talented Learners in an urban,socio-economically deprived neighborhood of a major metropolis on the West Coast.
My new roster has 30 new faces and names and personalities to meet in just a few weeks. I imagine that like previous classes, my learners will be curious, verbal, deep thinkers who have had limited exposure to the world outside of our community. It is always my goal to extend their experiences through literature, discussion, field trips, and by sharing my personal story as well.
My Project
The first unit of study in our reading program, Treasures, is called Taking A Stand. In searching for a core literature selection whose characters model the ideal, I came up with Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. I enjoy pushing my learners to read beyond their grade level and introduce them to the vast variety of children's literature available. Number the Stars will give me an opportunity to help the learners make connections, think deeply about the risks involved in standing up for your beliefs, and demonstrate alternative ways of making a difference in society.
As I mention each time I reach out for help, ten years ago I would have just ordered the class set and had it by week's end.
I do have the option of asking each child to purchase their own book, but then next year I would be in the same bookless state I am in now! And the children in my community cannot always afford to purchase materials for school. Donors Choose gives me the opportunity to provide for my kids in an equitable manner.
