My students need flexible seating options like wobble chairs, balance balls, wobble cushions, fidget bands, and kneeling mats to use instead of the "one size fits all" standard chair.
Each day I am thrilled to enter my kindergarten class with 24 different, unique young spirits. I embrace the successes and challenges of meeting their individual needs, some academically, some socially, some emotionally, and some physically. At this young age, we are molding and shaping their character as well as their ability to enter the ever-changing work force. Let me tell you, our future is looking bright.
My students are hard-working, creative, and energetic.
They tackle every high expectation we set for them with enthusiasm and put their best effort into each task. What impresses me the most however is how kind they are to one another. We do a lot of group and partner work, and they encourage and are proud of each other's growth. I have a few students with special needs and quite a few that are "fidgety" and want/need a lot of positive attention. Each year the number of needy and fidgety students seems to increase. I am grateful that we have created an environment where students (and their differences) are celebrated and students accept one another.
My Project
One size does not fit all, and this motto is especially true on how students learn best. Each year more students are coming in with special needs and unique personalities. The world and workforce is changing, yet we still are expected to learn in a standard table (desk) and chair. Imagine working, sitting, and being expected to stay focused in a table and chair for over six hours a day!
I want to provide a comfortable, diverse environment where students can choose to sit, stand, kneel or even lay down to learn and work with these wobble chairs, balance balls, wobble cushions, fidget bands, and kneeling mats.
As educators, we need to embrace, support, and respect their learning styles and create a space that is flexible and empowers students to choose what work space best fits their needs. Students will still be expected to master the rigorous standards of the grade level, but they will be able to do so in a much more relaxed, comfortable environment.
