My students are in a combined 3rd and 4th grade Harry Potter inspired, and teacher created environment. My students are creative, inquisitive, and an active group! They are very supportive of one another's successes, and the class as a whole, and will try their very best as we practice growth mindset daily.
Our school is urbanly located, and is a Title I school.
The program provides supplemental funding to districts with high concentrations of poverty in order to help meet school educational goals. The school has about 270 students, where over 90% receive or qualify for free lunch and breakfast.
What is inspiring about my students is that they pull together and support one another not only academically, but emotionally and socially. Many come to school with struggles, yet prepared to learn and as we say "grow our brains!" I want our classroom to be a place of comfort and a place to express their individual learning styles.
My Project
Each year, we embark on non fiction and research club reading units. The texts are selected to not only provide for meeting reading standards, but also informational and opinion writing units and social studies units. During these units, students require a broad selection of relatable and leveled texts to adequately differentiate. We have been borrowing many of our texts from our building's shared guided reading library and individual classroom libraries. The problem this poses is that demand is greater than supply when other teachers need to pull from the same genre. By having a readily available selection of texts, my students will have immediate and guaranteed access to interesting people in history. Currently, our classroom library is a quiet nook eliciting focus. However, it does not provide much comfort. My students deserve a comfy seat to further enjoy their new texts!
