Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a happy and busy mix of both kindergarten and transitional-kindergarten (4-6 year olds). As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to challenge them in a positive way and help them achieve their amazing potential!
They like to move, read and love lots of positive attention.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
The new phonics classroom rug will provide my students with the clean, colorful, and comfortable meeting place that they deserve. This specific rug also has the opportunity to directly and indirectly teach my students new skills around phonics and colors and will help prime my students for learning in all content areas. Because we use our classroom meeting rug for almost every topic, students will get daily use of this new addition. We start every morning, practice mindfulness, read books aloud and to ourselves, and have whole group instruction on the rug. We have had the same rug since before I entered the classroom. I inherited the rug from the teacher before me, and I believe she inherited it as well. It is currently tight and this causes some issues with students. Students also try to avoid the stains from lots of love and use from the past. This new rug has anti-microbial properties and is easy to clean in case of any spills unlike my current rug, which is so important for young learners and their health.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavioral issues, because each student will have enough room to have personal space and a square to call their own.
With less behavioral issues, we can increase our learning and time on task. I'm looking forward to seeing my students happier and ready to learn!
