My Students

My students live in a low-income, high poverty rural area. We are a 1A school, that is so tiny that grades K-12 are on the same campus. I grew up in this town and went to this school Pre-K through twelfth grade. I chose teaching as my career, so that one day I could come back and inspire the kids in my hometown to learn and grow.

These kids are absolutely desperate for a creative outlet, and I would like to give them one!

Our Fine Arts department is very small right now. We don't have many options for students who are artistically inclined. These kids are hard working, passionate, and give everything they do their all. There is hunger for more fine arts, and I would like to broaden the spectrum of artistic learning opportunities for these kids. These materials would be used not only by me, but by the music teacher as well. We work with all grade levels and this would impact our entire school.

My Project

My classroom has a bookshelf full of hundreds of plays for my theatre kids to read. I have collected these scripts for over ten years. They use them for projects, to find monologues, to perform, and to relax. However, something is missing.

My goal is to utilize this bench to create a comfy reading corner for my 8th-12th graders to enjoy.

Right now my "reading nook" is a fully stocked shelf next to a large window. Unfortunately there is no seating. The kids can sit cross legged on the carpet, but I would like to give them a proper space to relax and read. Please help me achieve this goal of creating a comfortable space for my students to read.
