Forty years ago, Apple was just a fruit. Twenty years ago, Google was just a funny word. Did you know that over half of the jobs that current pre-kindergarten students will hold when they graduate high school in 2034 don't even exist yet?
I work as the instructional/educational technology teacher in the computer lab of a great, diverse, and effective school.
Here, we have a mix of students who live locally, within walking distance, and many others who travel by school bus, city bus, and private van service to come to our school daily.
We have general education classes, special education services, and students who have been identified as gifted and talented. Our students were born in this country or overseas, and many are new to the English language. I teach students with professional parents and students who rely on government assistance for additional financial support. Every one of these students touches my life and are important to me.
As the tech teacher, another great aspect of my job is to lead the weekly Tech-Create club for selected students in grades 3-5. The boys and girls love participating in this enrichment class. The first several sessions of the club focus on digital photography. After a focused mini-lesson each session, they take their iPads and set out on a mission to capture beautiful pictures around our building, and sometimes, weather permitting, outside in our neighborhood. Once the photos are captured, we discuss, edit, and sometimes even get to print them. A favorite lesson of theirs is always about capturing the perfect selfie shot.
Once again this year, I'd like to be able for my students to take their work to another level.
With gift credit to spend at Shutterfly, my students created beautiful items, such as mugs, throw pillows, photo books, journals, mousepads, playing cards, etc. online, and each was delivered to our school. These items were either gifted to family members (a "mom" ornament with the child's selfie), or are much-treasured personal keepsakes from the school year. Each provided a fabulous way to show off their new photography talent, as well as reminders of our school for them for years to come. I know my new club students will be just as motivated and enjoy creating their own personalized photography keepsakes!
