Take A Look, It's In A Book...In The Classroom Library!
My students need a variety of engaging novels to choose from during daily reading activities. Having multiple copies of the books allows for more than one student to read the same book at a time.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My high school scholars are high achievers who will have the opportunity to earn an Associates degree by the end of their high school career. They come from diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods in the city of Philadelphia and have big dreams for their futures.
My scholars are courageously advancing through the early years of their language learning journey and I enjoy accompanying them every step of the way.
It is my sincerest hope that they will gain skills to become engaged global citizens, prepared to impact their school, their communities, and the world.
My Project
Last year, I started Sustained Silent Reading with my high school French 1 students. I quickly learned that the students needed interesting material in order for the routine to be enjoyable and effective. Having a classroom library will give the students a wide variety of books to choose from. The TPRS readers are different from books found in stores. They written for beginner and intermediate students. Upon completing a novel, the students will be proud of their abilities and they will show an increase their reading proficiency.
Second Language Acquisition researcher Stephen Krashen states that, "Picking up word meanings by reading is 10 times faster than intensive vocabulary instruction".
Reading books from the classroom library will impact proficiency in ways that I cannot as a teacher.
The books will be used during Sustained Silent Reading, but also during small group reading activities. Their presence will positively affect my incoming French students and students for years to come.
