My students bring with them all of the comforts, and sometimes, burdens, of teaching in a small town. Our music classes are filled with a variety of students from a multitude of backgrounds, and for all sorts of different reasons. Some of my students love music and have enjoyed the arts all of their lives, learning guitar with family or singing in our community church choirs. Others simply had no other classes to take and now, here they are stuck with this crazy teacher learning about didgeridoos and djembes!
Regardless of their backstory into winding up in my class, all of our students have one burden while in our small, rural classroom: lack of funding.
I'm trying to make our curriculum as enjoyable and engaging as possible with the materials we have. Through the help of our school, community, and DonorsChoose.org, we have already repaired classroom guitars and have begun incorporating cultural instruments into our daily routines. Soon, we'll even be starting a drum circle with our music appreciation classes! With the help of our donors, I want to create a music experience that will be pertinent and interactive to both the music lover and the non-musician.
My Project
Music History will be a new class for me next fall. I want to make my music history class engaging to the non-musician student and incorporate as many different facets of learning as possible to peak interest. I'm already planning a virtual field trip to Rome when we discuss early music. We'll also be creating stained glass windows of our favorite composers during the Medieval era. These are just the beginning of the crazy, unconventional activities I hope to do with my new class!
This project contains an array of different materials.
Books like The History of Music in Fifty Instruments and the Smithsonian book will be used as reference books for mini-projects. Accent on Composers Volume 2 is supplementary with the first volume that I've already purchased and have loved using this year with my music appreciation class. The Women of Western Music book is a new supplemental material book that I'm very excited about finding! My students know that I place a huge importance on shining a light on the groundbreaking women of music! With books like Secret Lives of Great Composers and The Greatest Music Stories Never Told, I want to use them in a more casual atmosphere to contrast research projects by having story time every so often. Whacked on Classics for Boomwhackers will also be a fun brain break and will help us add a performance element to the class!
I don't want this class to be just a textbook research class! I hope to provide a variety of resources so that we can delve into music history from multiple perspectives.
