Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each year, we learn about the respiratory system by attempting to displace water from a two liter bottle inverted in a pan of water. It's a messy, time consuming process, but one which allows kids to use their own bodies as a source of new scientific understanding. I only wish we had a spirometer!

I work with a talented group of recent immigrant students in an urban school district.

Our school serves the needs of English language learners in a program that emphasizes simultaneous content-area learning and language acquisition through collaborative, hands-on projects. Every teacher in the school is responsible for helping these young people grow and become comfortable in the language of their adopted country, and our diversity ensures a rich and interesting learning environment. Our students arrive from some of the world's most troubled regions, and often have had little prior access to education. We strive to bring each of them up to state standards for on-time graduation, meeting the same requirements faced by their native-born peers. My subject, biology, is often quite abstract to young people of any age, much less those from another country and culture. The more immediately kids can experience science, the better they will learn it. That's where your support can help!

My Project

The dry spirometer is a tool which measures the output of the lungs when a student blows into a mouthpiece. A small dial records the output, which can then be used to calculate all sorts of data about lung function. It's a portable, hand held device which comes with replaceable mouthpieces to prevent the spread of germs. Best of all, it's completely dry, which avoids the mess and tricky setup of the 'wet' water displacement method we have used in the past. Since the device is the same one used by physiologists, it also provides better data than other methods, allowing for more sensitive and accurate experiments. This will prove an excellent complement to the tools we have to measure heart function, and help illustrate how the circulatory and respiratory systems work together to maintain homeostasis in the body.

Your help in supporting our proposal will put the same tools found in college labs and doctors' offices into the hands of deserving youth, creating new opportunities and unlocking an untapped potential for growing future scientists.

Please support our dream of bringing real hands-on (lungs-on) physiology to a diverse and deserving group of young people as they pursue their own American dream.
