Take a Break From That Screen!

My students need games to get them interested in talking to each other about something OTHER than the latest video games.

My Students

Our students come from hard-working families who don't always have a lot of money. They're good kids who want to learn! I'm proud to say that, despite our challenges, parents in other areas of our city send their children to us because they know we have a learning environment here.

I like to see our students interact positively with one another.

When you get to talk with your friends, play something, and have a good time you are more likely to be ready for the many challenges you face both at school and at home. If we can get that feeling during recess, Games Club, and Fun Friday time, we can keep those smiles as we approach tasks like comparing and contrasting Cinderella texts and unbundling 100 to subtract. I don't mind them sharing on a computer game once in a while but I think many of our students stare at a screen too much and I'd like them to live in the moment.

My Project

Students will be using these materials to take a break from their screens and to get involved in talking with their friends. I know that technology can be useful and has its place in school, for sure, but I also know that students really DO enjoy talking with each other like we used to before everyone - kids and adults - had a screen in front of them all the time.

We do morning meetings and closing circles everyday but by far the most rewarding experiences for me as a teacher is to watch my students take those same skills I hope they're getting in those structured settings and take them into unstructured periods.

Play nice, share, take turns...these are all easier to do when there are games to play that kids enjoy and that keep them engaged. I'll also allow students to use these card games in our afterschool Games Club!

The bouncy bands, I'll admit, I saw on a fellow teacher's Facebook page and I'd like to give them a try. I've met my class for next year and I know they're good kids with lots of energy so I'd love to give them an outlet that helps them stay focused.
