My Students
The traditional way of teaching students to read isn't for everyone. My special needs students need a more hands on, engaging way to learn how to read. The Tag reading system provides a new way for my students to reinforce their learning to read.
I am a Special Education teacher who spends their day bouncing between grades kindergarten through third at a busy community-oriented charter school in Maryland.
I service close to seventeen students with varying needs, ranging from Dyslexia to Autism, from Learning Disabled to Developmental Delays. Many of my students do not learn in traditional ways. They lack the ability to sit down and learn a concept by just listening to a teacher. In order for them to learn something they need to be able to experience it directly. Often books are too abstract for them and they need to learn more hands-on strategies for attacking words within books.
My Project
The Tag reading system from Leapfrog is a great way to help students reinforce what they have been learning in the classroom. They will be able to use the readers independently during center time in their inclusive classrooms. Very often when my students are in their classrooms and it is independent reading or center time, they become lost or disengaged because they are not able to complete the tasks independently. The Tag system gives them the ability to read books independently. The Tag system also helps them to become more comfortable with operating technology. In order to be prepared for their futures not only do my students need to become successful readers but they also need to become more capable of handling technology.
Special Education is always in the news, but it never seems to be there for good reasons.
Very often the focus of helping students succeed is overshadowed by legal cases and court hearings.
