My students need 2 Tag Reading Systems, 11 Tag books, and 3 interactive learning centers to discover early literacy skills in the student-support classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students absolutely love anything interactive. The Tag learning system will allow my students to take control of their own learning. Literacy centers are the most exciting part of my students' day and interactive materials will allow them to learn even faster.
My students are kindergarten and 1st grade students with special needs from one of the highest poverty elementary schools in Philadelphia.
Our school is just starting a turnaround effort with extremely high expectations for our scholars. Our goal is to have each student make 1.5 years of progress in reading this year. My students have already made tremendous progress towards this goal, and I know they can achieve even more with access to the right materials.
My Project
The Tag reading system will allow my students to choose their own books, choose their pace, and really discover reading in their own way. I want to create several literacy centers within my classroom that will let my students discover reading for themselves. A rhyming pocket chart will allow my students to start recognizing similarities in words. Fridge phonics games will allow my kindergarteners to learn letters and sounds through fun, interactive, magnets. The library of Tag books will provide plenty of choices for even the most reluctant readers.
As a student support teacher, I have limited access to some of the materials that general educators have to use in their classrooms.
My students come to learn in the student support classroom every day and they really deserve to use quality materials to aide their learning. My students still have a chance to catch up to and even exceed grade level standards but there is no time to waste. The more my students enjoy reading in my classroom, the more likely they are to become lifelong readers.
