For the past 16 years I have worked with 4th grade students as a science teacher. This year I will be working with students in a different capacity as a 4th grade classroom teacher. I find my class of 4th graders so interesting because many of them know who I am from a sibling that had me as their Science teacher and they all loved Science and even taught some of them science in Kindergarten and 1st grade! What I love about my students is that they are all different and they are all different types of learners but the one thing they all have in common is that they all love to learn. My classroom is an ICT classroom which contains 12 special education students whom would greatly benefit from this hands-on project as apposed to just reading about frogs life cycle in a text book. That is what makes each of them special.
My Project
The materials will make a difference to my students because they will not only collect information about frogs but they will also get to observe them in their own environment. They will see how their frog adapts to its environment, but they could also discuss the changes they see, and share ideas about the development of their tadpole. Students will be able to bring the frogs home on holidays and they will also get homework sheets that they could share with their parents. We will read Everything You Need to Know about Frogs and other Slippery Creatures, to build their expertise about frogs’ life cycle, habitat, and the physical characteristics that make some frogs particularly “freaky.” Students will be supported to pay particular attention to the changes frogs go through.
