We are a Low Income/High Poverty area Title One School in a rural area. My classroom is a Kindergarten-1st and a 2nd multigrade classroom where all my students have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Many of my kiddos have communication, sensory, defiance, and social skills difficulties. We teach the general education standards, while focusing in on social skills and communication. I have myself and 5 paraprofessionals to accommodate our 11 students.
Certain sounds, smells, light, and or touches can be calming and certain ones can cause stress.
The goal of our room is to teach strategies to the students so they can one day return to the general education classroom. These activities will develop hand-eye coordination and tactile learning.
My Project
Most of the requested items are tactile kits that include different forms of fine motor skills equipment. My students will strengthen their fine motor skills by stacking cups, threading string through materials, lacing shoes, turning nuts and bolts, and performing many other tactile activities.
These kits will help my students develop their fine motor skills.
The kits will be put into containers to be used in our sensory room for individual fine motor skills station rotation. The diffuser will be used to help sooth the tensions in the students with essential oils and aromatherapy. These are all great one on one workstations.
