Tackling Tough Topics with Teens

Help me give my students access to top notch literature which addresses sensitive topics that teens are sure to be dealing with in their own lives.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from poor inner city neighborhoods. All receive free lunch and struggle to afford basic school supplies. Most are motivated to achieve so they can pull themselves out of poverty and create a better life for themselves and their families.

My students need to be empowered to lead a healthy, safe, disease free lifestlyle.

Healthy bodies and calm minds lead to peaceful hearts. Once students learn how to instill this discipline into their lives they'll have the key to a happy future.

Since reading is integral to success I'd like to equip my health classroom with young adult fiction books which tackle tough topics.

My Project

In my health classes, we discuss all kinds of sensitive topics: sex education, drug use/abuse, healthy/unhealthy relationships, eating disorders, LGBTQ and more. At times, it is difficult for students to open up about their own personal and family struggles. Having fictional characters to relate to will be similar to the idea of "I'm asking for a friend."

I would like my students to have books for independent/group reading projects on hot topics for teens that address the struggles of growing up and coming into their own.

Exposing students to interesting books which tackle tough topics in an engaging way will hopefully encourage their love of reading while improving reading comprehension.
