My students are a mixed class of general education, special education with English language learners as well. Including both Spanish and French languages. Bullying here can simply be laughing at a student who does not understand or speak the same language, doesn't have the same sneakers, etc.
My students live and travel within one of the toughest neighborhoods in the South Bronx.
Our school promotes and speaks with students about bullying. However the students have not connected that with "their" lives. This project will allow them to visit bullying from a peer perspective while also inviting them to share out. More importantly it allows them to understand there's more consequences to bullying than someone just feeling sad. Help us combat bullying with knowledge!
My students need 5 kindle e-readers and 5 copies of Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls to help them on their bullying research. During our projects as teachers we have noticed the bullying levels are extremely high. Due to the fact that our students relate bullying to just joking. The reality of bullying, the consequences, and the need to end it is not clear.
My students need to understand the consequences of bullying.
They are use to negative talk, put-downs, and consistently "joking" on each other as modeled from their neighborhoods and surroundings.
By reading the book "Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls" my students will be able to see bullying from a "peer" perspective. We will share stories as teachers and invite our students into the discussion. They will learn about bullying and the effects of bullying (on the body and mind). They will also participate in a reflection activity which will help them take responsibility for their actions and force them to think deeply. Lastly they will launch an "Anti-bullying Campaign" and show off their work to the younger students to help build an anti-bullying culture in our school.
